OVERVIEW
Yo, so back on September 14, 1941, German troops rolled into Lokhvitsa and Lubny. The 9th Tank Division (1st Tank Army) came in from the southeast, while the 3rd Tank Division (2nd Tank Army) hit from the north. Then, on September 15, they totally closed in on the Soviet armies from the Southwest Front—like, the 5th, 21st, 26th, and 37th Armies, along with the HQ of the SWF, were all trapped.
But yo, check this out: On the down-low, the Stavka was like, “Hey, 37th Army, you can dip out of Kyiv.” Then, on September 17, they were like, “Yo, SWF armies, break outta there and head east!” Plus, the 38th and 40th Armies were supposed to bust some moves to back them up by hitting up Romny and Lubny.
Meanwhile, in the defense zone, the Southern Front was like, “Let’s send over the 2nd Cavalry Corps, made up of the 5th and 9th Cavalry Divisions, to make a dope crew called the Cavalry Mechanized Group (CMG) led by General Belov.” They were all about swooping in on Romney and helping out the SWF armies. Plus, the 5th Cavalry Corps and 110th Tank Brigade were holding it down to the south. You may also be interested in the game Outlanders The Keeper’s Shanty.
Fast forward to September 19, the 9th Cavalry Division (2nd Cavalry Corps) got the green light to hit up Romny and snag those bridges over the Sula River. But yo, here’s the thing: The 129th Tank Brigade was kind of a hot mess since they just formed up, with troops from all over the place.
To keep the encirclement tight, the Germans brought in some backup with motorized divisions: the 10th Motorized Infantry Division and the SS “Das Reich” Division. They set up shop, blocking off the routes near Romny and pushing toward Korovnitsy.
And that’s the scoop on the operation in September 1941—like, ten intense turns of action in a totally authentic area with over 40 square kilometers of terrain to battle it out on. You got plains, mountains, and all sorts of cool stuff to deal with. Plus, everything’s set up just like it was back in the day, so you know it is legit.
